Terracotta clay, terra sigillata, black iron oxide
This amphora is inspired by the Ancient Greek red figure pottery style. It mimics this type of pottery in form as well as glazing-- painted with handmade terra sigillata and hand carved to reveal the red terracotta underneath.
Golden Dawn, an ex political party and as of 2020s court ruling a terrorist organisation, is responsible for many murders and violent attacks against refugee populations or the political left. They have appropriated the μαίανδρος, (the pattern of the two lower and upper bands), an ancient greek decorative design, as their party's symbol. The greek alt right is known to exploit the historical period of Ancient Greece's "Golden Era" in order to fanaticise Greeks.
This amphora places within the context of a prideful Ancient Greek history, a contemporary violent history that many Greeks refuse to come to terms with; Every X on the amphora and the date below it represent one attack carried out by either a Golden Dawn member/ politician or supporter, totalling to 104, the most accurate record of the violence sustained, yet significantly incomplete.
All data was borrowed from the project valtousx.gr an initiative of Human Rights 360 and the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation which aims to document all attacks carried out by Golden Dawn supporters.
