The futile process of building comfort on foreign land

clay, underglaze, looped video projection, original sound

In this piece I discuss the subtle but omnipresent discomfort that comes with being away from home and the efforts I make myself  to feel comfortable at a place that feels foreign and temporary. 63 handmade bricks are used to create a“home” structure around me. The performance is projected onto the final form on a loop. The bricks, albeit strong and unchanging, don’t fit onto each other perfectly, creating a structure that seems like it could collapse. The heat of the kiln that turns clay to stone also causes warping and shrinkage through the evaporation of water. This makes each brick crack where it did not form a strong bond or warp were it received the most heat. Through this juxtaposition of form and material, the structure that symbolises my manufactured comfort appears to be simultaneously strong and fragile.
