Moving Memories, 2.2' 1.7' x 1', 3 minutes and 44 seconds
Stoneware clay, archival VHS tapes, projector, original sound
This project reflects on the convoluted relationship between memory and time, migration and family, moving forward but remembering the past.
I create a handmade ceramic suitcase frozen in a state of partial collapse. Burdened not only by time and wear, but also by its responsibility of traveling a life over by one place to another, the suitcase bears dents, tears and holes. On it, archival family VHS tapes play on a loop. Obscured by the texture and warping of the suitcase, the videos are partially altered and unrecognisable, paralleling the ways in which time and distance blur and distort memory and familial relationships.
